You and Chronic Disease

Did you know that chronic diseases are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths every year? Or that chronic diseases cost the average American over $4,000 per year? That they account for 75% of healthcare spending and are largely preventable?

Did you know that as much as 80% of chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease can be prevented or managed by four simple steps?

Cliff Notes for Better Living:

According to the Centers for Disease Control, chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes account for 70% of deaths in the United States each year. Almost 50% of American adults have at least one chronic disease and over 10% suffer from daily limitations due to chronic diseases. That means that even if you don’t suffer from a chronic illness now, someone in your family almost certainly does.

Related studies by the Milken Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health estimated that chronic diseases cost the US economy over $1.3 trillion per year, approximately $4,100 for each and every American. 80 percent of the costs attributed to heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes might be avoided if Americans would follow these CDC guidelines:HSPH - Dollars and Sense of Chronic Disease

1)    Get some exercise – while guidelines vary depending on your health status, adults should get 2.5 hours of physical activity per week;
2)    Eat better – eat your fruits and vegetables;
3)    Avoid tobacco products; and
4)    Don’t drink alcohol in excess.
